U.S. filing links AI copyright rules to national security

The U.S. government filed an amicus brief in a copyright lawsuit involving an artificial-intelligence company and a major newspaper, arguing that rules making it harder to develop AI could threaten national security and give foreign adversaries an advantage.

The filing supports arguments that AI companies should be able to use large amounts of copyrighted material to train their systems. The court may consider the brief but is not required to accept its position.

The case began in December 2023. The court has requested any additional amicus briefs by Oct. 16, 2026.
