Washington Episcopal bishop plans 2028 resignation
Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, D.C., plans to resign on June 3, 2028, after the consecration and ordination of her successor. She said the diocese will begin preparing for the election of its next bishop.
Budde has led the diocese since 2011 and drew national attention after urging President Donald Trump to show mercy to immigrants and LGBTQ+ people following his second inauguration. Trump later criticized her sermon.
