West Michigan data center debate draws officials and protesters

More than 100 West Michigan municipal officials attended a closed-door seminar Monday in Dorr Township on planning, legal issues and transparency related to large data centers. The event was hosted by a private inspection company and included experts in urban planning, water rights and municipal law.

More than 50 protesters gathered outside, citing concerns about water resources and public access. Microsoft has announced plans for a large artificial-intelligence data center in Dorr Township, which remains under a moratorium until spring 2027; the company bought nearly 270 acres of farmland there in 2024.
