White House documents detail FBI monitoring tied to Trump records probe

Documents released Monday by a White House task force say the FBI tracked Melania and Barron Trump’s travel in 2022 while planning a search of Mar-a-Lago, and monitored phone records for Susie Wiles from February to May 2023. The surveillance was part of special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into whether Donald Trump illegally kept national security documents after leaving office.

The records say then-Attorney General Merrick Garland approved wiretaps on the advice of then-FBI Director Christopher Wray. The FBI searched Mar-a-Lago on Aug. 8, 2022. A federal judge dismissed the documents case in July 2024, ruling that Smith had been unlawfully appointed.
