Senate leaves SAVE America Act unresolved after Trump slows budget push

Senate Republicans left Washington early Saturday without passing the SAVE America Act, a voter integrity bill backed by President Donald Trump. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said the party was not dropping the bill but acknowledged Republicans did not have the votes to pass it now.

Republicans also paused a $150 billion budget blueprint from Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., after Trump raised concerns that it would fail. Johnson said Trump agreed Republicans should work through August and into September on a stronger budget reconciliation bill.

The Senate returns in the third week of September with other unfinished items still pending, including cryptocurrency regulation and college sports legislation. Before leaving, senators passed a short-term funding extension into early December, advanced a Russia sanctions package and confirmed Todd Blanche to lead the Justice Department.
