Amazon backs large Texas gas plant to power data centers

Amazon confirmed it is financing a large private gas power plant in Texas that could power data centers and become the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.

The project, developed by Pacifico Energy and known as GW Ranch, would be allowed to emit more than 30 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gases a year. Previously filed permits show the plant would have 35 turbines and generate 7.65 gigawatts, larger than any gas plant now operating in the country.

The move reflects a broader push by tech companies to secure power for AI operations more quickly by building or financing energy sources outside the traditional grid.
