Partial solar eclipse, Perseid meteors visible in Michigan this week

Michigan viewers can see a small partial solar eclipse Wednesday afternoon, with metro Detroit cities expected to see only a narrow sliver of the event.

The partial eclipse is expected to begin just after 1 p.m., peak just after 1:30 p.m. in most cities and end shortly after 2 p.m. Viewers should not look directly at the sun without proper eye protection, and regular sunglasses are not safe.

The Perseid meteor shower also peaks in mid-August. Michigan State University said the best viewing opportunities will be before sunrise on Aug. 12, 13 and 14, with darker skies offering better chances to see bright meteors.
