Russia releases former U.S. Marine for medical care after U.S. appeal

Russia freed former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman after U.S. officials urged his release so he could receive medical care in the United States.

Gilman, 32, had spent 1,666 days in prison after his Jan. 17, 2022, arrest. Global Reach, an advocacy group representing his family, said he had faced harsh treatment and that he was expected to be flown to a military hospital in Texas for medical and psychological evaluation.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised Gilman’s case with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in June. U.S. officials said Russian President Vladimir Putin granted Gilman a personal pardon on humanitarian grounds.
