ACLU asks judge to block Trump birthright citizenship orders

The American Civil Liberties Union and other advocacy groups asked a federal judge Tuesday to block President Donald Trump from enforcing new executive orders restricting eligibility for birthright citizenship in the U.S.

The groups said in a court filing that the orders, signed Aug. 6, improperly attempt to evade the Supreme Court’s June 30 rejection of Trump’s earlier bid to deny automatic citizenship to children born to undocumented immigrants and temporary foreign residents.

A White House spokesperson said the administration has followed court orders and that Trump’s actions since the Supreme Court rulings are consistent with the court’s analysis. The filing in federal court in Concord, New Hampshire, asks the judge to clarify that the latest orders do not threaten children covered by an earlier injunction.
