U.S. gas prices remain above $4 amid ongoing Iran conflict

The average U.S. price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline stood above $4.07 on Aug. 14, according to the AAA Fuel Prices tracker. That was nearly $1 higher than the $3.13 average recorded when President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025.

The increase followed U.S. military attacks on Iran and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for Middle Eastern oil exports. A Joint Economic Committee minority staff analysis estimated that the average American household had spent $477 more on gasoline since the conflict began.

Trump has defended the military action while acknowledging that consumers are paying more at the pump. Congress passed a House resolution in July directing the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran, but similar efforts have failed in the Senate.
