Cow shot after escaping truck on US-127 in Ingham County

A cow was killed by local law enforcement on Wednesday after escaping a livestock trailer near the northbound US-127 exit ramp at Lake Lansing Road. Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter officials stated the animal was improperly secured during transport and the transporter did not realize it was missing until arriving at a destination more than an hour away.

Officers from the Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter were called to assist before the cow moved from the highway area into nearby residential neighborhoods to the east. Initial attempts to chemically immobilize the animal proved ineffective, and the cow continued moving into a densely populated area near an elementary school.

A veterinarian joined the scene for a second attempt at chemical immobilization, but the effort was unsuccessful. Local law enforcement subsequently shot the cow to ensure public safety, a decision ICACS described as an unfortunate outcome to a challenging situation.
