Ice enforcement in Canton Township prompts school shelter-in-place

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents conducted a special enforcement operation in Canton Township on Tuesday morning, prompting a nearby elementary school to enact a shelter-in-place. The Plymouth-Canton Community School District secured Hulsing Elementary School at approximately 10 a.m., and the precaution lasted for a little more than an hour before law enforcement deemed the situation safe.

Canton Police Director Joseph Bialy stated that neither the police department nor the school district had prior knowledge of or involvement in the ICE enforcement. Bialy said police officers worked with the school to ensure students and staff remained safely inside the building during the operation.

Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell said the incident understandably caused fear and concern throughout the community. Dingell noted that she has been in contact with ICE, which acknowledged issues with the enforcement activities, and that she will continue working with the agency and local officials to address the concerns.
