Michigan congressman rents D.C. home from top campaign donor
Michigan Republican Congressman Jack Bergman is renting a Washington, D.C., home owned by an entity managed by Kim Kiyosaki, a longtime business partner and former wife of Robert Kiyosaki. The Kiyosaki pair has donated more than $257,000 to Bergman’s campaign and affiliated committees since 2016.
This year, the home was sold to Bergman’s daughter in a seller-financed deal. Brendan Fischer, director of strategic investigations at the Campaign Legal Center, told the Detroit News the transaction may have been an attempt to sidestep congressional ethics rules.
Bergman’s spokesman, James Hogge, stated that the retired Marine Corps lieutenant general pays fair market value for rent, a rate established by the previous owners, and that he is in full compliance with House Ethics rules. Bergman faces a second challenge from Democrat Callie Barr in the November election.
