Benson leads James in Michigan governor poll with 7-point advantage

A new poll from Mitchell Research showed Democrat Jocelyn Benson at 46% and Republican John James at 39% in Michigan’s governor race, with 9% of likely voters still undecided. Other candidates each garnered 2% of the vote: U.S. Taxpayers candidate Donna Brandenburg, Green Party candidate Douglas Campbell, and Libertarian Anthony Hudson.

The results revealed distinct patterns among voter groups. Benson captured 53% of women’s support versus 31% for James, while James secured 49% of men’s support compared with 38% for Benson. Among voters aged 18 to 29, Benson led with 45% to James’s 17%, and among those 65 and older, James held 50% to Benson’s 43%.

Mitchell Research gathered data through online panels and text messages that directed randomly selected registered voters to an online poll. The results were weighted by age, gender, race, region, education, and past election data from 2022 and 2024. The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points at the 95% confidence level, with larger uncertainty for smaller demographic groups.
