Road worker dies after crash on Lansing Road near Nixon
On Tuesday afternoon, a 24‑year‑old road worker was killed in a crash on Lansing Road near Nixon Road in Benton Township. Troopers responded at about 2:30 p.m. to the incident. The crash occurred in a temporary road‑work zone where northbound traffic was closed for construction.
The collision involved a pickup truck stopped by a flagger, a Kenworth sanitation truck, and a road commission truck. The impact pushed the two trucks into the commission truck, and the worker was struck by the pickup and sanitation truck. The flagger was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pickup driver and passenger were taken to University of Michigan Health‑Sparrow Hospital with injuries; the sanitation truck driver and passenger were not injured. Investigators noted that alcohol and drugs did not appear to have been factors. Lt. Rene Gonzalez said the incident is a reminder of the dangers road crews face.
