Portland school board candidates share plans for student success

On November 3, residents within the Portland school district will have the opportunity to cast their vote for three of five candidates for the Portland Public Schools Board of Education. The five candidates are Angela Shinaver, Douglas A. Logel Jr., Roy Atherton, Greg Smith, and Nathan Smith. The Beacon has called for questions and responses, and the final 16 questions were sent to each candidate on September 17, with replies due by September 24.

Angela Shinaver has worked for a nonpartisan audit office for the State of Michigan since 1999 and currently serves as Principal Audit Supervisor. Her career has focused on audits, financial and operational analysis, and internal controls, with a particular emphasis on education. She attended Portland Public Schools, graduated in 1994, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from Grand Valley State University in 1998, and achieved Level 3 of the MASB Certified Board Member program, earning the Award of Distinction and the Data Skills Specialty Certification.

Since 2023, she has been a trustee for the Portland Foundation for Public Education, supporting teachers and classrooms. She is running for re-election because she believes in the district’s students, teachers, and future. Her platform emphasizes student achievement, mental health, and school safety, and she plans to use data-driven decisions to support educators and students.
