CDC webpage cites wide range of defensive gun use estimates

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has restored a webpage section citing estimates of 60,000 to 2.5 million defensive gun uses each year. The agency notes that estimates vary based on survey questions, populations, time frames and study design.

A revised survey by Georgetown professor William English estimated 2.2 million defensive gun uses annually, up from 1.67 million in his original 2021 study. The revised estimate included cases involving protection from animal attacks and excluded military, police and security work.
