Court blocks federal demand for commercial driver records

A federal court temporarily blocked the Trump administration from obtaining a database containing sensitive personal information on 17 million commercial drivers. The order also bars the administration from cutting more than $10 million in federal funding to a motor-vehicle administrators group over the records dispute.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and attorneys general from 21 other states sued federal transportation and homeland security agencies, alleging violations of federal privacy laws and improper efforts to create a separate database of state records. The states will seek a preliminary injunction while the case proceeds.

The records can include drivers’ names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, license numbers and licensing histories. The database was established to help states share commercial licensing information and verify applicants’ records across state lines.
