Dearborn leaders unite against planned anti-Muslim demonstration
Religious leaders, Dearborn’s mayor and the police chief called for unity after a conservative activist announced plans for a so-called Christian Crusader March at a City Council meeting Tuesday night.
The attention surrounding the demonstration prompted officials to move the meeting to a larger venue. Police Chief Issa Shahin urged residents to stay home to avoid conflict, while Christian and Muslim leaders described Dearborn as a welcoming and peaceful city.
The city has nearly 30 Christian churches and more than a dozen mosques, according to Mayor Abdullah Hammoud. Leaders said differing faiths should not prevent residents from caring for one another.
