Eaton County prosecutor confirms removal of Larry Nassar from sex offender registry
Eaton County prosecutors confirmed that Larry Nassar has been removed from Michigan's sex offender registry following a 2021 Supreme Court ruling that clarified the applicability of the Sex Offender Registration Act to offenses committed before July 1, 2011.
The removal, which does not alter Nassar's federal or state prison sentences, stems from a court decision on September 9 that allowed retroactive registration requirements for offenses committed before the 2011 cutoff. Prosecutors noted that Nassar's charging documents referenced offenses preceding that date, and that he received a 60‑year federal sentence in 2017, followed by state sentences of 40 to 175 years in Ingham County and 40 to 125 years in Eaton County in 2018.
Simone Biles testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 15, 2021, addressing the FBI and institutions that failed athletes, and her testimony highlighted the failure of USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee to protect athletes. The court ruling and Biles' testimony together underscore the ongoing impact of Nassar's abuse on the community.
