MPSC approves DTE-Google data center power contracts in Wayne County

MPSC approved special contracts between DTE Electric Co. And Google LLC to supply electricity for a data center in Wayne County’s Van Buren Township, ensuring no costs are passed on to other customers. DTE officials say the facility will begin service in December 2027, with maximum load by December 2028.

The commission approved a primary supply agreement (PSA) and a clean capacity accelerator agreement (CCAA) that will provide new clean energy resources and battery storage to power the data center. The CCAA requires Google to pay for DTE to develop up to 1,600 MW of renewable energy and 480 MW of battery storage.

DTE contends the approval will result in a $1.7 billion benefit, reducing costs to other customers over the 20-year life of the contract. The review process included a fully contested case with full access to all documents filed, and the commission’s authority relates solely to the terms and conditions of the contracts for utility service.
