Florida Republican breaks with Trump over immigration enforcement

Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, a Florida Republican, says in a new advertisement that some of President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far and that Hispanic voters feel betrayed.

Salazar cited data showing that half of the people detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in July had no criminal record. Her criticism comes as ICE arrests have reached record levels and Republicans express concern about losing Latino voters ahead of the midterm elections.

Salazar is seeking reelection in a Miami-Dade district where about three-quarters of residents identify as Hispanic and Trump won by nearly 15 points in 2024.
