Former Lansing mayor David Hollister dies at 84

David Hollister, who served as mayor of Lansing from 1994 to 2003, died yesterday at the age of 84.

During his tenure, Hollister led a Save GM campaign that kept the automaker in mid‑Michigan, helped create the downtown Stadium District, and guided the construction of a minor‑league baseball stadium on Michigan Avenue. He rose from a social‑studies teacher at Eastern High School to a state legislator before being elected to three terms as mayor, and later became head of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth under Gov. Jennifer Granholm. In 2017 the city honored him by renaming City Hall after him.
