Gubernatorial candidates push for gas tax suspension amid rising Michigan fuel prices

Both Michigan gubernatorial candidates — Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Republican U.S. Rep. John James — floated suspending the gas tax on some level — federal or state — as affordability at the gas pump has become a central issue in the November election.

James called on Monday for the suspension of both the federal gas tax, which is 18 cents, and the state gas tax, which is 52.4 cents, to provide relief to Michigan drivers. He urged Democrats to declare a state of emergency to suspend the state gas tax.

While Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall opposed a suspension, Democratic lieutenant governor nominee Bridget Brinks said she would keep the door open, and Benson’s spokesperson confirmed support for conversations in the legislature to lower costs for Michigan families.
