Hemp THC businesses Press Congress to avert a federal ban
Congress voted to close a federal loophole that allowed intoxicating hemp products, including THC gummies and drinks, to spread outside regulated marijuana markets. A government-funding law signed by President Donald Trump delayed the ban’s effective date from Nov. 12 to Dec. 11, giving lawmakers more time to consider regulating the products.
Industry advocates are seeking rules that would limit THC amounts, restrict sales to people 21 and older and bar imported cannabis compounds. The ban would cap THC at 0.4 milligrams per container; industry proponents say that limit could eliminate businesses and affect other hemp products, while supporters argue some products could move into legal in-state marijuana markets.
