House returns to confront looming shutdown deadline

The House returns Monday after a five-week recess with a Senate-passed bill to keep the federal government funded through Dec. 11. Current funding expires Oct. 1, and broader negotiations have stalled.

The measure passed the Senate 90-6 and preserves funding for programs including SNAP, WIC and disaster relief. House leaders are expected to fast-track it to the floor, where it would require a two-thirds majority.

The chamber could also vote on a recommended censure of Rep. Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., and contempt resolutions involving two people subpoenaed in an ethics investigation of former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla.
