Ingham County cyclosporiasis cases reach 880 as statewide total nears 14,000

Ingham County has reported 880 cases of cyclosporiasis as the statewide outbreak of the parasitic illness grew to 13,909 cases as of Aug. 13, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. That is up from 12,485 cases on Aug. 6 and just 174 on June 30. Michigan typically sees around 50 cases of the illness in a typical year.

Wayne County has the most cases statewide with 2,131 combined in Detroit and the rest of the county, followed by Oakland County with 1,344 and Washtenaw County with 1,028. Two people have died in connection with the outbreak, and 314 cases statewide reported being hospitalized as of Aug. 13.

MDHHS said new case reports and diarrhea-related emergency department visits have been slowing, and officials believe most exposures happened in late June and early July. The department moved from daily to weekly case updates, now issued Thursdays. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce, and Taylor Farms has recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico; MDHHS says residents should still avoid the recalled product while otherwise following routine produce-washing guidance.
