Ionia County Child Advocacy center faces 12% budget cut

The Ionia Montcalm Secure and Friendly Environment Child Advocacy Center is facing a 12 percent budget reduction this year due to a decline in federal funding. The center, which serves Ionia and Montcalm counties, lost $76,219 from its budget as a result of decreased money available through the federal Victims of Crime Act.

Executive Director Lori Kirkhoff stated that approximately 81 percent of the center’s budget goes toward employee salaries. Because the center handles about 250 cases annually, Kirkhoff explained that losing even one employee could result in the loss of an entire program or service, such as mental health therapy.

The center has already reduced its Friday operating hours and is working with lawmakers to identify additional funding opportunities. It is also seeking community support through fundraising efforts to fill the gap and maintain current staffing levels.
