Iranian president backs expired U.S. deal as path out of conflict
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defended an expired memorandum with the United States, calling it the best option for ending what he described as a state of “neither war nor peace.” He said Iran’s Supreme National Security Council supported the agreement and that it did not amount to capitulation.
The memorandum, signed in June, set a 60-day timeline for ending the conflict and addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The deadline passed last week without a compromise, while the dispute over Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz remained unresolved.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Pakistan’s top military leader, Asim Munir, would visit Iran on Monday as part of efforts to promote regional peace and security. A hardline Iranian security official separately warned that Iran could retaliate against neighboring countries that aid the U.S. war effort.
