Latino turnout rises in Michigan primary, drawing focus to November vote

Latino turnout in Michigan’s Aug. 4 primary increased by 13% to 18% compared with the 2022 primary, according to post-election research from MI Poder. The growth included voters with limited or no prior primary voting history.

Latino voters were part of Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s primary-winning coalition. MI Poder organizer Pete Vargas said the group is studying voters’ concerns, including the economy and aggressive federal immigration enforcement actions, ahead of the November general election.

Fourteen Latino candidates received more than 144,000 votes in the primary, and eight advanced to the general election. MI Poder plans extensive voter outreach across urban, suburban and rural Michigan communities over the next 10 weeks.
