Lawrence wins MI-7 Democratic primary, will face Rep. Barrett in fall

Lansing-area political organizer William Lawrence has won the Democratic primary for Michigan's 7th Congressional District, a seat that includes most of Eaton County. The Associated Press called the race for Lawrence at 11:23 p.m., with Lawrence receiving 43.2% of the vote with 55% of ballots counted.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink finished second with 29.2%, and retired Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam received 27.6%. Lawrence will now face incumbent U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, in the November general election.

Michigan's 7th District covers Clinton, Ingham, Livingston and Shiawassee counties, most of Eaton County, and parts of Genesee and Oakland counties. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the seat a "toss-up" heading into the fall. Brink and Maasdam both issued statements congratulating Lawrence, and the three candidates are scheduled to appear together Saturday at a unity rally hosted by the 7th Congressional District Democratic Committee.
