Michigan Democrats revive package aimed at easing household debt

Michigan House and Senate Democrats have refiled nine bills intended to lower costs and provide financial relief for families statewide. The package includes proposals involving bankruptcy protections, retirement benefits for corrections officers, healthcare costs for local public employees and debt-collection protections for assistance programs.

Rep. Brenda Carter, D-Pontiac, said her bankruptcy bill would exempt more property and give people overwhelmed by debt additional room to recover. Republicans argued the package would expand state programs and increase administrative costs. The measures return to the Legislature as Democrats continue seeking approval.
