Michigan faces economic risks as U.S.-Canada trade talks stall

Michigan could face significant economic consequences as trade negotiations between the United States and Canada remain stalled. Michigan conducts more trade with Canada than any other state, and the affected Canadian goods account for about 5% of bilateral trade.

The United States has imposed tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel, dairy products and agricultural equipment starting Sept. 8. The countries currently have no plans to resume talks.
