Michigan State Fair renews livestock safeguards after swine flu case

The Michigan State Fair is reviewing livestock biosecurity protocols after swine flu was detected at the Kent County Fair. Officials said equipment will be disinfected before animals arrive, and a licensed veterinarian will monitor livestock throughout the fair.

Animals showing signs of illness will have their temperatures checked and may be moved to an isolation area for observation. Staff will also promote hand-washing, limit visitors’ contact with pigs and maintain around-the-clock monitoring in the livestock building. The fair is scheduled for Labor Day weekend in Novi.
