New Michigan plate will fund animal welfare programs

Michigan drivers will soon be able to support animal shelters through a new fundraising license plate under animal welfare legislation signed Monday by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

The plate will cost motorists $35 in addition to their vehicle registration fee. Revenue will go into a new Protecting Michigan’s Pets Fund and be sent quarterly to the Michigan Pet Alliance.

Whitmer also signed two bills requiring people convicted of animal cruelty or neglect to pay restitution toward animal care and rehoming.
