Report: White House construction plans top $900 million

The Trump administration plans to spend at least $900 million on construction projects at the White House, according to records reviewed by The Washington Post, a figure far higher than previously disclosed and covered mostly by taxpayers.

Rather than seeking a direct congressional appropriation, the administration funneled money from other federal agencies and private donors into a small White House maintenance account historically used for a few million dollars in routine upkeep. Since President Trump took office, $875 million has been directed into that account, including transfers from the Secret Service and the White House Military Office totaling $500 million and $305 million from private donations, budget records show.

The funding covers the East Wing ballroom project, Lafayette Square upgrades, a new helipad and a visitor screening center. A federal appeals court ruled Friday that the administration needs congressional approval to continue building the ballroom, with judges writing that Congress holds exclusive authority over construction and demolition of White House structures. Trump said he would appeal, setting up a potential Supreme Court fight over his authority to remake the property.

The White House did not answer questions about the total cost or full funding sources but said the spending is consistent with Congress's original intent. As of the end of June, officials had ordered more than $100 million in work paid from the account, according to budget office records.
