Senate stopgap bill would pause White House research grant proposal

Senate leadership released a bipartisan stopgap government funding measure Sunday that would temporarily block a White House proposal to give political appointees control over federal research grants.

The continuing resolution would fund the government until Dec. 11 and block the grants proposal only until then. The provision came out of bipartisan talks in the Appropriations Committee and was accepted by Republican leadership.

The Senate is expected to consider the bill this week before leaving for August recess. The House-passed funding bill does not include a similar provision, leaving the chambers to resolve differences before government funding expires at the end of September.
