State Rep receives rabies shots after bat encounter in Ingham County

State Rep. Emily Dievendorf, D‑Lansing, woke up to a bat flying through their apartment a few weeks ago. After cornering the animal in a box and releasing it outside, the representative later received a rabies booster and a series of vaccinations.

The rep’s experience comes amid a CDC health alert issued on Sept. 10 that warned of increased rabies exposures nationwide. Ingham County officials noted that four rabies‑positive bats have been found in the county this year, similar to last decade’s data.

Health officials explained that post‑exposure prophylaxis (PEP) involves a series of rabies vaccinations given over weeks, and that the county can assist with co‑pays. Dr. Nike Shoyinka emphasized the importance of timely testing and coordination with animal control, and veterinarian Dr. Kath Edsall advised that pets should also receive rabies boosters.
