Treasury denies credentials to several journalists covering G20 finance meeting

The U.S. Treasury Department denied credentials to individual journalists from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News for a Group of 20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the decision was unrelated to the reporters’ viewpoints, but the department has not explained it.

The meeting, hosted by Bessent, includes finance ministers, central bank governors and senior officials from major economies. The denials add to escalating tensions between President Donald Trump’s administration and news organizations over media access and public scrutiny.

The New York Times and Bloomberg News condemned the exclusions, saying they threatened media freedom and accountability. The meeting runs through Tuesday, while the broader G20 summit is planned for December in Florida.
