Trump administration narrows Endangered Species Act protections

The Trump administration is narrowing how the Endangered Species Act applies to unintentional wildlife deaths under a new Fish and Wildlife Service memo. The change would exempt foreseeable risks from activities such as commercial fishing and logging, while maintaining bans on intentionally killing, capturing or harming protected animals.

The policy shift follows other changes to the law, including a narrower definition of harm and new economic considerations in species protections. Attorneys general from 20 Democratic-led states and Washington, D.C., sued the administration last week over the overhaul.
