Trump allies float expanded federal role in 2026 midterm elections

Trump allies have promoted measures that could expand federal control over the November midterm elections, including a national emergency declaration, the seizure of ballots or voting machines, and deployment of federal personnel to polling sites. None of the proposals has been formally authorized.

Steve Bannon has advocated sending immigration officers to monitor polling places. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt did not rule out such action when asked about it.

A separate executive action signed by Trump in March placed restrictions on mail-in voting, but federal courts blocked it and the administration appealed to the Supreme Court. Legal observers said any attempt to seize election materials or otherwise assert federal control would likely face court challenges.
