Trump falsely claims hospitals are reversing transgender patients’ surgeries
President Donald Trump falsely claimed at a Friday campaign rally in South Carolina that hospitals were performing “reverse surgery” on transgender people at his order. No presidential order requires hospitals to perform such procedures or reverse earlier surgeries.
Adrian Shanker, a former Biden administration health official, said medical decisions should remain between patients and their providers. Trump made the claim while campaigning for a Republican Senate candidate ahead of the state’s primary runoff.
Trump’s January 2025 executive order instead sought to restrict federal funding for gender-affirming care for minors, while a separate federal rule ending certain Medicaid and CHIP payments is scheduled to take effect Oct. 13.
