Trump leaves open emergency move on midterm election rules

President Donald Trump declined to rule out declaring a national emergency to seek greater control over the 2026 midterm elections, giving a cryptic response during an August 11 interview after conservative host Wayne Allyn Root suggested the idea.

Root urged Trump to use a national security emergency if the Senate does not pass the SAVE America Act, a Republican-backed bill that would require proof of citizenship for federal voter registration and photo identification at the polls. Trump responded, “Stranger things have happened,” without directly addressing Root’s legal theory.

Senate Republicans have postponed action on much of the bill until after the August recess, with the chamber scheduled to return September 14. Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Trump of seeking to take over American elections and said Democrats were prepared to oppose the effort.
