Trump’s inflation claims on grocery prices fall short of data
President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that grocery prices have fallen since he took office, but seasonally adjusted CPI data show a 3.4% rise in grocery prices from January 2025 through August 2026. Overall consumer prices are up 4.8% over the same period, and his assertion that “everything” is going down is not supported by the figures.
Five of the six CPI categories for grocery products have risen: cereals and bakery products up 3.3%, meats, poultry, fish and eggs up 3%, fruits and vegetables up 4.6%, nonalcoholic beverages up 6.3%, and other food at home up 3%. Dairy and related products remained flat, and eggs are down 31.1% but are an outlier.
The year‑over‑year inflation rate was 3% in January 2025, 3.4% in July and August 2026, and has been above 3% each month since the Iran war began. Trump's claim that he inherited the worst inflation in history is not supported by the current data.
