White House rescinds $800M in federal funds across multiple agencies

The White House announced Friday evening that it had rescinded over $800 million in congressionally appropriated funds across a range of federal programs, using the Impoundment Control Act to deploy a pocket rescission as the fiscal year approached.

The rescission targets programs in the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Justice, with $567 million earmarked for HHS to support services for refugees, asylees, and other non-citizens. The Supreme Court allowed the rescission to proceed, and the GAO noted that Congress has 45 days to respond to the request.
