Bank of Canada holds rates as tariffs threaten growth and prices

The Bank of Canada left its benchmark interest rate unchanged as U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum and agricultural goods clouded the economic outlook, according to Rabobank analysis.

The tariffs could raise consumer prices while slowing exports, production and hiring in affected sectors. The conflicting pressures have increased stagflation risks and prompted the central bank to wait for more data before changing policy.

The rate hold leaves borrowing costs largely unchanged for now, including for variable-rate borrowers, while businesses tied to cross-border trade face continued uncertainty.
