Chatfield trial delayed as expert witness issue goes to Appeals court

The trial of former Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield in Ingham County Circuit Court has been adjourned indefinitely after his attorneys won a stay over the qualification of forensic-accounting expert Michelle Gallagher. The issue now goes to the Michigan Court of Appeals, with no decision timeline set.

Chatfield faces 13 felony charges, including conducting a criminal enterprise and embezzlement from the Peninsula Fund. Gallagher testified that 99% of more than $150,000 spent on the Chatfields’ personal credit cards from January 2020 through April 2021 was reimbursed by the nonprofit.
