CDC restores wide-ranging estimates on defensive gun use

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has restored a reference to estimates of defensive gun use on its website, several years after removing the language following lobbying by gun-control advocates.

The restored wording cites a 2013 Institute of Medicine study and gives an annual range of 60,000 to 2.5 million defensive gun uses. It also notes that estimates vary based on study methods and that more research is needed.

Emails obtained by The Reload show advocates pressed CDC officials to remove the higher estimate during the Biden administration. The agency has not publicly explained either the earlier removal or the restoration, which came as the Trump administration rolled back several Biden-era firearms initiatives.
