Michigan voters to decide campaign finance restrictions in November

The Michigan House voted 77-26 Tuesday to approve a citizen-led proposal that would restrict campaign contributions from regulated utilities, certain government contractors and affiliated individuals or organizations. The measure received bipartisan support but failed to pass the Senate, so it will remain on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.

The proposal would also expand disclosure requirements for political communications, including online advertisements that identify candidates or ballot proposals without expressly urging voters how to vote. Voters will decide whether the changes become state law.
