Crypto bill faces Senate scrutiny over Trump family financial ties

Congress passed a cryptocurrency bill that remains stalled in the Senate as lawmakers weigh rules dividing oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the commodities regulator. The measure would give the commodities agency a primary role over much of the industry.

The debate has intensified after financial disclosures showed President Trump earned more than $1.16 billion from cryptocurrency-related ventures in 2025, including more than a half-billion dollars from World Liberty Financial. Federal regulators also conditionally approved a banking charter for the company, run by Trump’s sons and the sons of a presidential aide.

Senate Democrats have called for investigations into the family’s crypto interests and foreign financial ties. Sen. Cory Booker said the bill needs stronger provisions on ethics, consumer protection, illicit finance, conflicts of interest and market integrity.
